A History Of British Ferns is a seminal botanical work written and illustrated by the English naturalist Edward Newman. It was the primary book for the Victorian fern collecting craze known as "Pteridomania" It transformed the complex botanical study into an accessible, fashionable outdoor pastime for the general public. This copy, published in 1854 has been bound in green cloth with pretty embossed boards and spine. There is a gilt pictorial of a fern to the front and gilt titles to the spine. The binding has darkened particularly around the extremities and spine. There is a small piece missing from the top of the spine, along with wear to the base. There is a previous owner's small book-plate to the front paste-down. There are a few loose pages and the pages are lightly toned with the occasional spot of foxing. However, the pages are clean throughout, beautfully illustrated with several line drawings within the text. pp. xvi + 344 +10. Overall a fair copy, although a suitable copy for any budding fern enthusiast.
