Illustrated By: Thomas Bewick
Published By: Longman & Co.
St Mary's Books is proud to present this 1847 edition of "Bewick's British Birds" or "History of British Birds" by Thomas Bewick in two volumes. Handsomely presented in green cloth with intricate blind tooled decorations on the cover, these hardback editions feature gold gilt lettering on their spines. Within the pages of this work, the reader is treated to the first "field guide" for non-specialist birdwatchers, complete with stunning wood engravings which is widely considered some of Thomas Bewick's finest work, and detailed descriptions. This two volume set contains - Vol. 1: i-xxxix and 374 pp.; and Vol. 2: i-xxiii, 406pp. followed by i-xxxvi of appendices and synopses. This charming set is in good condition - there is some bumping to the corners and edges, the cloth on the boards is slightly worn, there is offsetting on both title pages, and the spine on volume 1 is slightly weak. However, the interior pages of both volumes appear remarkably bright, clean and readable. "Bewick's British Birds" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any natural historian.
