Facing Death Or, The Hero Of The Vaughan Pit. A Tale Of The Coal Mines is an adventure novel written by G.A. Henty. Unlike the majority of Henty's works, which focus on military campaigns, this novel is set against the backdrop of the 19th century British coal mining industry. This copy, has no date, although possibly circa 1880's. It is beautifully bound in red cloth with pictorial and titles to the front and spine. The text is enhanced by the line drawings of Gordon Browne, which include a frontispiece and seven additional full page illustrations. Furthermore, each chapter heading and ending is illustrated by a pretty little vignette. There is a publisher's list to the rear. Overall, this is a good copy, displaying slight fading and a light lean to the spine. However, the binding presents well. The pages are clean with just a touch of foxing to the prelims and to the rear. Previous owner's neat inscription to the top of chape one. pp. 304 + 32. Overall a beautiful copy and a must for any G.A. Henty enthusiast.
