Duty with illustrations of Courage, Patience, & Endurance is an influential conduct book written by Scottish Author Samuel Smiles. It is the final installment of his famous four volume series on Victorian values, and uses biographical vignettes to show that the choice to fulfil one's moral duty constitutes the foundation of personal intregrity, true happiness, and societal strength. This presentation copy, bound in full tan leather was published in 1880. It is embellished with gilt ruled lines to the front and rear boards with a gilt coat of arms to the centre. Decorative gilt tooling and a black title band lie between five raised bands to the spine. All edges and endpapers are in red marble. The book is overall in good condition, displaying just a little rubbing and wear to the leather. There is heavy foxing to the prelims and towards the rear, however the pages are generally clean. pp. xv + 430. Overall a handsome copy and a lovely addition to any private library.
