Character is a self improvement book written by Scottish Author Samuel Smiles. Published after the success of his first book titled Self-Help. Character is a moral guide, arguing that individual virtue, integrity, and self-discipline are fare more critical to personal success than raw intellect or legal frameworks. This presentation copy, bound in full tan leather was published in 1877. It is embellished with gilt ruled lines to the front and rear boards with a gilt coat of arms to the centre. Decorative gilt tooling and a black title band lie between five raised bands to the spine. All edges and endpapers are in red marble. The book is overall in good condition, displaying just a little discolouration. There is a previous owner's book-plate to the verso of the front free endpaper. The prelims are a little foxed however the remaining pages are very clean. pp. viii + 388. Overall a handsome copy and a lovely addition to any private library.
