St Mary's Books are incredibly proud to present this 1746 sixth edition of "Fables" by the late Mr. John Gay. Bound in brown leather with five raised bands to the spine which features a red leather title band with gold gilt lettering, this hardback two volume set contains 194pp. (Vol. 1) and 155pp. (Vol. 2). Within the pages of this book, the reader is treated to fifty-one fables in verse, filled with moral lessons and a sprinkling of the author's general distate for the servility of the courtiers and the vanity of court honours. The writings were, however, written for six year old Prince William, for which he hoped to gain some preferment - though he was resuntingly offered a royal post, his friends deemed it inferior and he turned it down. This fascinating set, grounded in history, is in very good condition. Though the leather binding is bumped and rubbed, the title band is missing from the second volume, and there is some minor offsetting and foxing within both volumes as well as an inscription to the front free endpaper - this text nevertheless remains remarkably well-preserved given its age and rarity. John Gay's "Fables" are looking for a new home where they will be similarly enjoyed and appreciated.
