The Parent's Assistant or Stories For Children was originally published in 1796 and written by the celebrated Irish-Author Maria Edgeworth. It successfully bridged the gap between 18th century instructive fiction and the more naturalistic, realist storytelling of the 19th century. The book was highly popular during the Victorian Era, famously read by the young Queen Victoria before her coronation and is referenced in classic novels like William Thackeray's Vanity Fair. This set, A New Edition, complete in six volumes were published in 1817. They are bound with the original paper boards and green cloth spines. Each volume is in good condition with some age-related wear to the bindings, however, the paper onlay title bands on the spines are missing. There are a few pencil markings on the front free endpaper of the first volume and on the rear of volume three. The text blocks are a little loose on volumes two and four, with the rear free endpaper a little loose on volume five. The pages are remarkably clean given the age of this set, showing only minor age-related discolouration. Overall a lovely little set, scarce in this edition and remarkably preserved.
