St Mary's Books is proud to present The Folio Society's 1999 edition of Colonel Bailey's 1946 work Mission to Tashkent - containing 269 pages alongside an introduction by Peter Hopkirk (xi-xvii) and an introduction by the author himself (xxi-xxiii). In this memoir the author details his dangerous undercover operations through Central Asia; Colonel Bailey makes his way through cities such as Tashkent, Bokhara, Kashgar and others which had been affected by the chaos of the Russian Revolution. This edition is housed in a burgundy slipcase and is beautifully bound with a matching burgundy cloth spine, gilt with the author's name and the title. The cover is printed with a facsimile of a historical, handwritten passport, replicating the false documents that Colonel Bailey would have had to use during his deployment. Inside, maps by Denys Baker and photographs from Colonel Bailey provide a helpful visual guide to the adventures detailed. There is a small mark on the spine between the author's name and the title, otherwise, there are no obvious blemishes on this copy. This fascinating account of espionage between the tumultuous years of 1918-1920 would be the perfect gift for any reader interested in Central Asian history or the activities of the Secret Service.
