A Sentimental Journey Through France & Italy by Laurence Sterne was written as a direct, witty counterpoint to Tobias Smollett's cynical travelogue Travels Through France and Italy. Sterne pioneered a new approach to travel literature by exploring personal emotions, and human interactions. This copy published in 1903 is beautifully half bound in burgundy leather with marble paper covered sides. It features beautiful floral gilt detail and titles on the spine. The book is in very good condition despite a little rubbing and wear to the leather, especially to the rear. The pages within are clean and beautifully illustrated. pp. viii + 216. A lovely gift idea or a charming addition to any private library.
