St Mary's Books is proud to present this beautiful 8-volume collection of historian Edward Gibbon's monumental work The History of the Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire - a meticulous record of The Roman Empire from the time of Trajan to the fall of Constantinople. This collection is especially unique, printed in 1821, it is bound in half maroon leather with marbled green and orange covers; the spines are embossed with a gilt lion passant, likely the armoral binding stamp of Edward Beaumont Venn. The collection is complete, containing Vol.I (pp.411), Vol.II (pp.492), Vol.III (pp.487), Vol.IV (pp.508), Vol.V (pp.500), Vol.VI (pp.522), Vol VII (pp.468) and Vol VIII (pp.440). All volumes are in very good condition despite some age-related foxing, which mainly affects the title pages, and some rubbing to the spines, covers and corners. Vol.VII has a small white mark on the bottom left of the front cover. This set comes contains 4 folding maps (in volumes II,III,IV,V), all of which are in very good condition, with only two very small tears to the map in Vol.IV, there is also a portrait frontispiece in Vol.I of the author. Prior to the main text, there is a small biography on Gibbon (Vol.I: pp.iii-xxxv). This is an incredible set of books and they would truly be a standout collection for any ancient history enthusiasts.
