Daniel Lambert has been remembered for more than two hundred years as England's heaviest man, weighing in eventually at 52 stone 11 pounds. But he deserves to be remembered for much more than this. He had a great interest in field sports of all kinds and was highly respected for his knowledge and experience of breeding dogs and cockerels. For many years he was a benevolent keeper of the County Bridewell prison in Leicester, but when this closed in 1805 he became something of a recluse. He reluctantly decided that to provide a regular income he was going to have to exhibit himself in London and moved to 53 Piccadilly in April 1806. This proved to be a good decision, he was well received and had many hundreds of visitors from all levels of society, returning to Leicester later in the year a rich man. His corpulence finally took its toll and he died while visiting Stamford in June 1809. His Leicester friends paid for a gravestone there, the inscription referring to his 'exalted and convivial mind'. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the first actual book about the great man.
