Football: Our Winter Game

Charles W. Alcock

St Mary's Books is proud to present this early edition of "Football: Our Winter Game" by Charles W. Alcock, Honorary Secretary of the Football Association. Bound in navy cloth with intricate blind tooling forming a boarder around a charming illusration of footballs and rugby balls in a goal, this stunningly presented little book additionally has gold gilt lettering to its spine. Inside, one finds 139 pages of text, sandwhiched between numerous contemporary advertisements for products such as Billiard Tables and Horse Clothing of all Kinds. Within the pages of this book, the reader is treated to a history of football up until the 1874 publication of this book - complete with a discussion of its medieval origins, the codes and regulations instituted, and the types of players one finds. Though there is no official publication date on this copy, we estimate it to be an early edition, and one of the few such copies for sale in the UK outside of Unviersity Libraries. This copy is in very good condition - though there is some slight staining on the cover and some bumping to the edges of the boards, the interior remains clean, bright and readable, remarkable for a copy of this age and rarity. "Football: Our Winter Game" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any historian of the early game, or football enthusiast.
