St Mary's Books is proud to present Helen J. Parry's handwritten "Record of Aeroplanes seen starting from April 7th 1940", accompanied by a letter addressed to Helen. Bound in red cloth with blind tooling mimicking a quarter binding, this little hardback book contains multiple handwritten pages, chronicling Helen's wartime plane spotting adventures - from the multiple days where she went out and saw "nothing" to the full-page diary entries of paritcularly interesting days - one gets a first-hand and intimate account of life on the home front during the second world war. This little diary is accompanied by what appears to be a love letter from "Cyril", who was in training for the RAF, and in this letter details his experiences of various examinations he undertook, from morse code to arithmetic. Sandwiched between the deeply personal comment, "I have heard "Only You" too and I like it very much. Our song apparently." and a request for further photographs of Helen, Cyril remarks towards the end of the letter, "?What do you think of the news? It looks as though we are on the Offensive at last. Here's hoping the war will be over soon and Hitler & Co. have been made to pay for their crimes.". This intimate historical document is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any collector or historian alike.
