The Rebel (First Edition)

Albert Camus

Edition: First Edition

Published By: Hamish Hamilton Ltd.

St Mary's Books is incredibly proud to present this 1953 first edition of "The Rebel" or "L'Homme Revolte" by Albert Camus, translated from the French by Anthony Bower. Housed in its original paper dustjacket with a playful intermixture of black and red ink lettering and the borders, this hardback book is bound in bright crimson cloth with gold gilt lettering to the spine. Inside, one finds 273 pages of text. Within the pages of this book, the reader is treated to a profound philosophical essay exploring the history of rebellion, revolution, and the moral crisis of modern violence, in which Camus argues that authentic rebellion affirms human dignity, but when corrupted by absolute ideologies it can lead to totalitarianism and mass murder. This copy, and its original dustjacket, are in very good condition, with few notable blemishes or imperfections other than some minor bumping to the top edge of the dustjacket. "The Rebel" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any philosophy enthusiast.
