St Mary's Books is incredibly proud to present this 1779 second edition of "Evelina, Or a Young Lady's Entrance into the World", published anonymously but later revealed to be authored by Frances Burney. This fantastic 3-volume epistolary novel follows the titular character Evelina, the unacknowledged but legitimate daughter of a dissipated English aristocrat, and her introduction into society after living in rural England for most of her life. The novel satirises 18th-century English society and was a significant precursor to the work of Jane Austen and Maria Edgeworth. Bound in calf leather with a red leather title band and a black leather band indicating the volume, this hardback book is decorated with gold gilt lettering to the spine and a beautiful bow motif encircling the volume number. Inside, one finds Vol. I, i-xv, 235pp.; Vol. II, 263pp. and Vol. III, 263pp.. This three volume set is in very good condition - though the corners are slightly bumped, the lettering is faded, there is some foxing and offsetting on the prelims pages of each volume, and there are pen inscriptions on the title pages and the front free endpaper from previous owners. However, this set remains remarkably bright, clean and readable given its age and rarity. "Evelina" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any literature enthusiast.
