St Mary's Books is proud to present this 1949 first edition of "Perchance: A History of British Naval Aviation" signed by the author, B. J. Hurren, and dedicated to Captain Brady, R.N.A.S., indicating this book may have once been in his possession. Housed in its original pictorial dustjacket featuring black and white photographs of aeroplanes and warships set amongst a stormy grey sky, this hardback book is bound in green cloth with gold gilt lettering to the spine and green top-edge staining. Inside, one finds i-ix and 197 pages of text peppered with contemporary black and white photographs. Within the pages of this book, the reader is treated to the enthralling story of the transition of naval aircraft "from crude contraptions of the stick-and-string pioneer era to their present state of fighting efficiency as the spear-head of attack", written by a former service officer and executive in Fairey Aviation. This book is in very good condition - though the original dustjacket can only be described as "good" due to the significant bumping and wearing to the corners and edges, the book itself has been well-preserved, other than some minor pen annotations from a previous reader. "Perchance" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any aviation enthusiast.
