The Diary of Samuel Pepys (8 Volume Set)

Samuel Pepys

Edition: First Edition Thus

Published By: George Bell & Sons

St Mary's Books is proud to present this 1893 first edition thus of "The Diary of Samuel Pepys", transcribed from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College Cambridge by the Rev. Mynors Bright, with Lord Braybrooke's Notes, and edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. Bound in navy cloth with gold gilt lettering to the spine and top-edge gilt, this hardback set is complete in eight volumes. Within the pages of this book, the reader is treated to the work of "the greatest diarist of all time" - originally written in an elaborate code to shield his activity from his contemporaries, but included alongside a key to illuminate his activities to his successors, Samuel Pepys' diary contains an intimate view of daily life and political activity in the 17th century. With entries ranging from Pepys being awoken by a cat, to a discussion of his time onboard a ship with Charles II, this is a fascinating slice of history, here presented with the landmark Wheatley translation. This set contains - V.1 i-lxvii and 367pp.; V.2 434pp.; V.3 397pp.; V.4 453pp.; V.5 451pp.; V.6 408pp.; V.7 415pp.; V.8 i-vi, 333pp. and 56pp.. This set is in very good condition - with few notable blemishes or imperfections other than some minor bumping and staining to the corners and edges, Vols 4-8 have Frederick Gill ex-libris paste-downs on the front free endpaper, and the cloth on Vol. 8 is stained, however overall this set remains well-preserved. "The Diary of Samuel Pepys" is looking for a new home and would make for the perfect gift for any history enthusiast.
